Fager Hugo is a unique 2-in-1 bit that offers two fittings, each with a different result.
When fitted one way, it creates a front lock, but when turned around and fitted the other way, the joint does not lock.
WITH front lock (horse on the right side running forward/upward) is recommended if you would describe your horse as the following:
* It can be inconsistent in the connection; it needs to lie more in the hand.
* Prefers stability and less movement
* Do not actively seek contact with the bit.
* Drops the bit/falls behind the hand.
WITHOUT front lock (horse on the right side running forward but upside down) is recommended if you would describe your horse as the following:
* Can be inconsistent in the connection.
* Can be stiff on a straight bit.
* Sucks the bit back to chew on it.
* Attempts to place the tongue over the bit.

Fager Hugo is a double-jointed Sweet iron bit featuring a Front Lock system. This means that the bit is lightweight enough to make the horse light in the hand, and when you have good contact in the reins, the bit locks like a straight bit. This will help your horse to maintain consistent contact if it struggles to trust the bit.
Hugo offers outstanding stability and comfort. When the horse is working, the Front lock is there to assist, whatever the positioning of the head. From a low position (stretching out) or higher (over a jump), the closure continues to work even if the reins pull the bit upwards, making the bit turn downwards – this is where a regular lockup system would fail. It also makes it considerably more forgiving against any unexpected movements of your hands.
When used backward, Hugo will work like a traditional double-jointed bit when riding, and lock backward instead. This can be good for horses that work well on a double-jointed bit, but can suck the bit back and chew on it, as the horse won't be able to such it back to bite on it.
The small tongue relief makes this bit a good option for horses with a sensitive tongue who can open their mouth, pull the reins, and move the tongue around.
Material
Sweet iron is a covering on top of a bit made of stainless steel. The purpose is to disguise the metal taste from stainless steel and create a pleasant, sweet taste, encouraging the horse to seek more contact and hold on to the bit. Following use, sweet iron will start to oxidize and turn brownish grey, this is to be expected.
Sweet iron is a good choice for horses who need to seek more contact with the bit.
Fixed rings
Fixed rings are attached to the mouthpiece, and the reins’ contact will be more still towards the mouth. Fixed rings will encourage a horse to keep the contact towards the bit and create a stable feeling for both the horse and rider.
