Fager's leather bits are highly beneficial for horses that exhibit sensitivity to most bits, dislike metal bits, and can get wear on the teeth. The leather material possesses the ability to adapt to the contour of the horse's mouth, thereby rendering the bit uniquely suited to that particular horse.
With the perfect amount of flexibility and the taste of the leather, horses tend to feel very comfortable and relaxed in the leather bits.
Fager's leather bits are handmade to offer the best quality possible. The leather is stitched by hand around a wire that's covered with nylon. This assures you that in case of an accident, the horse will not get hurt by the wire in the middle. The wire isn't only to keep you and your horse safe, it also keeps the shape of the bit.
The Baby Pelham sidepiece creates a frame feeling for horses who have a tendency to become unstable but still strong. We recommend using the Baby pelham with a delta bridle or two reins, one in the large fixed ring and one in the small ring. With two reins, you can easily regulate how much leverage you want from the bit by shortening, or lengthening, the rein that is attached to the bottom ring. With more leverage, you get a slightly lower neck and more effect, with less leverage you can get the horse a bit higher in the neck with less effect. If you use
Fager’s adjustable delta, you have the same choice without having to use 2 reins. This design acts as a curb version of a Baucher bit.
Fagers leather is vegetable tanned; no harmful chemicals or artificial colors are used.
If the bit gets dry, we recommend soaking it in food-grade paraffin oil.
Make sure that the stitching points to the outside of the mouth and not against the mouthcorners.
NOTE! The leather material is not suitable for horses that chew or bite on the bit. The bit is therefore not covered by warranty or right of complaint if the damage has occurred due to the horse biting the bit.
Please note, horses who are wide over the premolars/teeth may need to size up in this bit due to the upper shanks. This is because the sidepiece of the bridle is attached to the upper shank of the bit, which is placed higher up where some horses are wider than others.
More about the mouthpiece
The Pelham bit is designed to give the rider both direct rein aids and additional leverage when needed. The upper ring attaches to the cheekpiece of the bridle, while the lower ring is used for the curb rein or a converter. When the lower rein is used, the shank creates leverage, applying pressure to the poll, the mouth, and the curb chain under the chin.
This action encourages the horse to rebalance, soften in the contact, and come down/forward to the bit with a framed, stable feeling. The Pelham can be useful for horses that become strong, heavy in the hand, or need extra help maintaining balance and control, especially in jumping or faster work. It should always be used with a soft, educated hand and a clear release when the horse responds.
A shorter shank, 5cm, will give the rider a more uplifting effect. The shorter shank is suitable for horses who need to loosen up through the shoulders and come up in front. The shorter the shank; the easier it is to create bend and flexion.
A longer shank, 7cm, encourages the horse to follow the bit's contact forward and down. This is good for horses who can get high in the neck and strong.
More about the pelham shanks
Horses who are wide over the premolars/teeth may need to size up in this bit due to the upper shanks. This is because the sidepiece of the bridle is attached to the upper shank of the bit, which is placed higher up where some horses are wider than others.
The sides of the bit should rest gently against the corners of the horse’s mouth without pressing, to prevent the bit from moving from side to side.
