Bits for strong horses

Choose the right bit for a strong horse

Choosing a bit for a strong horse can be a challenge. All horses are different and need different help from the bit. Some horses can be strong and sensitive, while others can be strong, heavy, and unresponsive.

Please note that we always recommend checking your horse's mouth, teeth, and body before taking help from a bit.

We are here to help guide you to the best option for you and your horse!

"My horse can get heavy, stiff and lean on a traditional snaffle bit, but I don't want a curb bit"

This is a very common phrase we hear when customers want to find a new bit for a horse that tends to get strong, stiff and heavy in the hand.

We have some great bits for horses who might not be strong but rather heavy, stiff, or lean on the bit, where you want to find a bit that's more effective than a traditional snaffle but not as effective as a curb bit.

These bits are available with multiple sidepieces. For this category of horses, we recommend sticking to the snaffle sidepieces. For example, Loose rings, Fixed rings, D-rings, Baby fulmer, Fullcheek or baucher.

For horses that can get high in the neck and unsteady, we recommend Kimblehook or Baby Pelham.

John Sweet iron

John Sweet iron mouthpiece is excellent for horses who can be sensitive in the mouth and need a gentle mouthpiece to be comfortable, thanks to the smooth joints. The Sweet taste, together with the smooth joints, make the horse seek contact with the bit and be stable in the hand. The Kimblehook can be described as a baucher bit with the possibility of adding leverage when needed. The further down you place your rein; the more brakes you get. The stable feeling Kimblehook creates can be good for fuzzy and worried horses that get strong, unbalanced, and hard to turn.

The Sweet taste and smooth joints make the horse seek contact with the bit and be stable in the hand. The Baby Pelham sidepiece creates a frame feeling for horses who have a tendency to become unstable but still strong. We recommend using the Baby pelham with a delta bridle or two reins, one in the large fixed ring and one in the small ring.

Adam Leather bit

Fager's leather bits are highly beneficial for horses that exhibit sensitivity to most bits, dislike metal bits, and can get wear on the teeth. The leather material possesses the ability to adapt to the contour of the horse's mouth, thereby rendering the bit uniquely suited to that particular horse. The Baby Pelham sidepiece creates a frame feeling for horses who tend to become unstable but still strong. We recommend using the Baby pelham with a delta bridle or two reins, one in the large fixed ring and one in the small ring.

Maria Titanium

Maria Titanium is excellent for horses who can be sensitive in the mouth and need a gentle mouthpiece to be comfortable, thanks to the smooth joints. Maria’s joints are designed to never press against the sides of the palate or create uneven pressure over the bars. It is an extremely comfortable bit which contours naturally around the tongue, relieving the bars from constant pressure. The 2,5-ring rings is good for horses that can get stiff and strong, too long and low, but the gentle mouthpiece still helps you keep a consistent contact.

"My horse is strong and unresponsive"

Julia Sweet iron Show pelham

Julia Sweet iron bit is a great bit for horses who can get too strong, stiff, and/or unresponsive on a normal snaffle bit but still can fall behind the bit and lose contact. The sweet taste makes the horse seek contact with the bit, while the roller helps prevent the horse from getting too strong. The Show Pelham sidepiece is similar in design to a regular pelham, however the clever design creates greater flexibility. The action generates a softer feeling in the rider’s hands, giving a more fluid, less rigid feeling than you have using a regular pelham. This pelham gives more leverage and, therefore, also more brakes on a strong horse.

Julia Sweet iron Gag

Julia Sweet iron bit is a great bit for horses who can get too strong, stiff, and/or unresponsive on a normal snaffle bit but still can fall behind the bit and lose contact. The sweet taste makes the horse seek contact with the bit, while the roller helps prevent the horse from getting too strong. When using a gag rein through the rings, you will get a flexible, uplifting feeling in the hand. This can be good for horses that get long and low, heavy and strong where you need a lighter feeling in the hand. When using a gag rein through the rings, we recommend using a second rein connected to the snaffle ring as well.

Sally Titanium Kimblehook

Sally Titanium bit is a great bit for horses that can get too strong, stiff, and/or unresponsive on a standard snaffle bit. The lightweight, together with the roller in the middle, will give you as a rider a lighter feeling in the hand, softer contact, and a quicker response when you take the reins. The tongue relief can help if your horse can pull the reins down and forward. The effect of the Kimblehook is more direct than found when using curbs with longer shanks: the lower the rein is placed on the sides, the sharper effect this bit will create. With this combination, you will get a light feeling and very direct response when you take the reins.
