Titanium

Titanium is a tasteless metal that naturally adapts to the mouth's temperature, encouraging the horse to stay light in the hand. This material does not rust or oxidize.

How to take care of titanium

This bit is easy to care for and takes no effort.

Care after riding:

  • After riding, you can put it in water or wash it off to get the dirt off the bit. The bit won't rust or oxidize.

  • There's no need to dry the bit off afterward if you don't want to.

How to store the bit between rides:

  • There's nothing special you need to consider when storing a titanium bit.

We have titanium in both grey and blue. The grey coating is the natural color of the bit; it will get shiny if the horse chews on it. The blue coating on the blue titanium bits is added to the bit and will disappear if the horse chews on it. This will not affect the use of the bit and is not dangerous for the horse.

Sweet gold

Sweet Goldâ„¢ Bit incorporates advanced materials and thoughtful design, rich in copper. This material will help your horse to seek more contact with the bit due to the copper taste, but it does not rust.

How to take care of sweet gold

This bit is easy to care for and takes minimum effort.

Care after riding:

  • After riding, you can put it in water for a shorter time or wash it off to get the dirt off the bit.

  • There's no need to dry the bit off afterward if you don't want to, but the copper in the bit can get discolored if you leave it wet. However, it won't rust like sweet iron.

How to store the bit between rides:

  • There's nothing special you need to consider when storing a sweet gold bit, except that the copper in the bit can get discolored if you leave it damp. However, it won't rust like sweet iron.

The shiny gold color can get discolored over time due to the copper in it, but it won't rust or make any difference for the bit.

The sweet gold material contains copper, which makes it a bit softer. If you have a horse that tends to chew a lot on the bit, this may cause bite marks on the surface. Due to the softer material, it's essential to keep an eye on the bit so it doesn't have any deep marks from the horse biting that may cause discomfort to the horse.

Sweet iron

Sweet iron is the material that takes the most effort to care for. The purpose is to disguise the metal taste from stainless steel and create a pleasant, sweet taste, encouraging the horse to seek more contact and hold on to the bit. Following use, sweet iron will start to oxidize and turn brownish grey, and this is to be expected. When this happens, the ‘blue’ will almost disappear.

How to take care of sweet iron

Sweet iron is meant to rust, and the process will start as soon as the bit gets in contact with moisture and/or salvia.

Care after riding:

  • After riding, wash your bit with water. Do not leave the bit in the water; just wash it off.

  • Dry the bit with a towel so it's dry.

How to store the bit between rides:

  • Keep the bit in a dry space.

The coating will disappear if you forget the bit lying in the water. This will not affect the bit, except that the taste may disappear.

If you forget to dry it off with a towel or store it in a damp space, the coating may be uneven due to the rust. If that happens, you can dry it off with food oil or put it in Coca-Cola to make the coating smoother. As it's stainless steel underneath the coating, the bit won't rust all the way through and won't be unsafe to use.

How long the sweet iron coating will last depends on many factors, for example; how much the bit is used, how you keep the bit and take care of it. The bit can still be used even after the coating is gone, the only difference is that the bit will have less taste.

Leather bits

Fager's leather bits are highly beneficial for horses that exhibit sensitivity to most bits, dislike metal bits, and can get wear on the teeth. The leather material can adapt to the contour of the horse's mouth, thereby rendering the bit uniquely suited to that particular horse.

How to take care of leather bits

When you buy a leather bit from Fager, the bit is already oiled and ready to be used right away!

Care after riding:

  • After riding, wash it off with water to get the dirt and salvia off the bit. Do not leave it in water as it will dry out the leather.

  • Dry the bit off with a towel until it's dry.

How to store the bit between rides:

  • Keep the bit in a dry space.

Care over time:

  • If your leather bit gets dry and stiff over time, you can regain the soft elasticity by soaking it in food-grade paraffin oil. It's important not to oil it too often as it will make the leather porous and delicate. Keep sight of the bit while oiling it so it doesn't get saturated.

The leather material is not suitable for horses that chew a lot on the bit. The bit is therefore not covered by warranty or right of complaint if the damage has occurred due to the horse biting the bit.

The leather is stitched by hand around a wire that's covered with nylon. This assures you that in case of an accident, the horse will not get hurt by the wire in the middle. The wire isn't only to keep you and your horse safe, it also keeps the shape of the bit.
